Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course

After Barber we came home and finished prepping the 15 for its first race of the season, we would be running both cars at Mid Ohio. We would also be running with 3 new drivers. The 14 would be run by Nik Romano, Matt Million and a new friend to the team Austin Vargo. While the 15 would be piloted by
our own Ryan Keeley and another couple of new friends Rob Walker and Satakal Khalsa.

After the run to Birmingham our tow rig was sent to the shop for maintenance as a few issues were found towing cross country with a hauler full to the brim with spares and 2 cars. The shop didn’t finish in time so for the first time in the year we have sourced a tow rig from Penske, this will be a continuing story.

Keeley and the rig makes the trip to Ohio and the team is there to meet him. We go through the motions on Friday, qualifying both cars well and getting ready for our weekend.

Saturday starts well and we again begin another 8 hour race with both cars on track. Unfortunately a few hours in and we suffer a cooling issue on the 14. The team replaces the radiator and gets us back on track but its apparent the damage is more than we first thought, the engine is missing badly and eventually we retire the car and prepare for the first motor swap after the season.

The 15 is running steadily through the day and takes 7th place unfortunately it was also in the paddock when the checkered flag flew as it ended up off track and missing its new nose as well as another radiator and all the cooling bits. It was definitely going to be a long night.

Thanks to the amazing work of the crew by the next morning both cars were on grid and ready to run again. The 14 got a new motor while the 15 had its fender replaced, nose rebuilt and all new radiator, oil cooler and other miscellaneous bits replaced, thanks to our spares package that is continually replenished thanks to our friends at Bimmerworld. It was nothing short of a miracle to have all this work done in one night. The boys even got a few hours sleep, keyword, few.

Sunday we take the green much to the surprise of our competitors and immediately start making our way up the ladder. In the thrash the night before we missed the brakes on the 15 and a few hours in we had to change pads. The 14 was running decent though the backup engine was down a bit on power. At
the end of the race we were in a 3 car battle for 3rd. We knew we were pushing the Open Throttle Team and it was doubtful they could finish without another stop for fuel, and we were running just fast enough that the round 3 team was unable to catch us. With 30 minutes to go we were looking at another potential podium, that’s when the voltage started dropping and with 10 minutes to go we found ourselves on the side of track with no battery. That’s when the Open Throttle Team stopped for a splash and we were passed by the Round 3 team. We would finish the day in 5th and 7th place. Disappointing for sure but we are proving our desire to finish no matter the odds.
